Mob Squad wins second summer tournament

The IMBA Mob Squad won its second tournament of the 2009 summer season when it beat the Walnut Creek Nationals, 10-1, in the final of the 2009 Nations Kickoff Classic 16U Wood Bat in Manteca.

The Albany team again won with timely hitting (31 runs in four games), solid pitching (only five runs allowed) and outstanding defense (five double plays -- including double plays in each of the last two innings of its closest game, a 5-2 win over Kali Baseball).

(Photo: top row-Coach James Izumizaki, Zachary Chiang, Lucas Yovanovich, Pike Goldschmidt, Yoshi Uemura, Kyle Tannahill, Michael Rabin, Coach Sam Marthinson; bottom row-Patrick Xu, Marcellus Love, Isaiah Smith,
Nathan Gill, Adam Lieber, Paul Kennedy.)

Yoshi Uemura went the distance in the final, scattering four hits against the hard-hitting Nationals.

The Mob Squad made key defensive plays in the championship -- Zachary Chiang, Kyle Tannahill and Lucas Yovanovich turned a 6-4-3 double play in the 1st inning, catcher Marcellus Love, the tournament MVP,  tagged out a runner trying to score from third base on a blown suicide squeeze in the 3rd, and left fielder Patrick Xu threw out the potential tying runner trying to take third base from first on a ball hit down the left-field line with two outs in the 4th.

The Mob Squad led the Nationals on RBI by Nathan Gill and Uemura and broke the game open with eight runs in the bottom of the 4th. Paul Kennedy led off with a double over the left fielder's head and scored on an infield error. After Gill walked and Isaiah Smith loaded the bases with his second single of the game, the Mob Squad added runs on singles by Xu and Chiang and Love's walk and got two runs apiece when the Walnut Creek infield couldn't handle balls hit by Uemura and Kennedy.

Weekend highs included Uemura's nine RBI (including six in the opener against CV Elite), Chiang's seven hits (including five in a row to open the tournament), Xu's six runs and Kennedy's two doubles. Chiang, Love and Kennedy each reached base safely nine times. Gill earned two saves, while Xu, Chiang and Yovanovich also earned wins on the mound.

The Mob Squad improved to 15-8 in tournament play.

Bremer hurls no-hitter in Northwoods League

Tyler Bremer (Berkeley '08) threw a no-hitter for the Eau Claire Express -- its first ever -- in a 4-0 win over the Battle Creek Bombers in the Northwoods League before 1,659 fans at Carson Park.

Bremer, who played as a freshman at UC Davis, struck out the side in the ninth inning to finish with eight strikeouts, two walks and one hit batsman.

"I didn't really realize it 'till pretty late in the game," he said afterwards. "I'm sitting in the dugout, and I see no one is around me, and I look at the scoreboard and I say, okay, well....I knew that last pitch there was no way that guy was going to hit it. Everyone was clapping and I was so amped up, it was a great feeling."

After the game, teammates celebrated by smothering Bremer in shaving cream.

Bremer is 2-0 with a 2.35 ERA and 23 strikeouts in 23 innings of work.

The game also featured a franchise-record ninth home run for Kole Calhoun.

Lamb shuts out Hawaii collegians

Chris Lamb (Berkeley '08) gave up no runs in his first eight innings of work for the Hawaii Aliis in the Hawaii Collegiate Baseball League.

Lamb picked up his first win in an 8-4 win over the Waimea Waves. He struck out 11 batters and allowed only four hits and give walks.

In the Northwoods League, former Berkeley High teammate Tyler Bremer also has a 0.00 ERA, having thrown shut out innings in both outings for the Eau Claire (Wisc.) Express.

IMBA Mob Squad wins Memorial Day tournament

Making its tournament debut, the IMBA Mob Squad captured the Ultimate Memorial Day Tournament in Twin Creeks, winning knockout games over the Whiplash (5-3) and Rohnert Park Crush (7-3) to avenge defeats to both teams in pool play a day earlier.

Albany's Mob Squad won the 15U wood bat tournament with solid pitching, timely hitting and clutch defense.

It rallied from two runs down in the 6th inning to beat the Crush, which entered the final with a 4-0 record. Lucas Yovanovich's hard-hit ball down the right side brought in two runs to tie the score at 3-3 in the 6th. In the top of the next inning, the Crush second baseman failed to handle Adam Lieber's hard-hit ball and after a force-out, Patrick Xu singled with his 10th hit of the tournament, and tournament MVP Paul Kennedy drove in the go-ahead run with another single. With two outs, Zachary Chiang singled in Xu with his fourth hit of the game, and Marcellus Love singled in Kennedy and Chiang with insurance runs.

Mob Squad pitchers allowed only six earned runs in five games to finish with a 1.27 ERA. Ryan Masterson pitched five innings of relief in the final to get the win, his second of the tournament. Yoshi Uemura started both the semifinal and final and allowed only two hits until maxing out at seven innings of work on Monday. In pool play, Chiang struck out 12 batters in six innings in a 3-1 loss to to the Crunch.

In Monday's semifinal, the Whiplash pulled to within 5-3 in the 7th inning and had the bases loaded when center fielder Kennedy went into the gap to snare a line drive for the final out of the game.
